Prendre soin des plantes et des sols : caractéristiques et transformation des pratiques de care en milieu agricole

Abstract : In the context of the transformation of human modes of production, and their impact on biodiversity loss, this thesis focuses on the relationships between farmers and nature in European intensive farming landscapes. This thesis studies what types of relationships to plants and soils exist in the context of commercial agriculture (Scheromm et al. 2014), and identify how these relationships are being transformed. To do this, I conducted in-depth interviews and participant observation with farmers in France in Hérault and Bassin parisien, and in Belgium in Wallonia. With the support of care ethics (Gilligan, 1992; Tronto, 1993), and how they replace attention and concern for humans and non-humans vulnerability at the core of ethics and morality, I study how farmers may experience and learn relationships based on care for nature and attention towards vulnerability and interactions, despite existing economic and productive concerns for nature. This work shows that farmers' rela-tionships to nature may also be made of care and cooperation with nature, that these relationships may become more complex, and that plant and soil care may change and be adjusted, thanks to farm-ing practices ecologization (Lamine, 2017). In that sense, I show that specific observation practices of ecological mechanisms at plots and edges’ scale may contribute to build different modes of atten-tion and relationship to nature, based on attention and cooperation with species. Finally, in this work, I highlight the relevance and the limits of the new types of cooperation between farmers and between farming and non-farming networks, for biodiversity conservation. Finally, this work underlines the role of perceptions in the acquisition of knowledge about nature, and more broadly in the construction of attitudes and practices taking into account interactions between species and biodiversity.
