Histoire des lettres et tradition de l’erreur. De l’Avis pour dresser une bibliothèque de Naudé au Dictionnaire historique et critique de Bayle

Abstract : Does Pierre Bayle’s Historical and Critical Dictionary (1697 and 1702) constitute the universal Library theorized by Gabriel Naudé in his famous Advice on Establishing a Library (1627 and 1644)? Both perspectives share the same critical approach, based on the rejection of error and gullibility; both authors agree on the issue of authority, which they question and debunk. Nonetheless, their projects for the practice of “critical” analysis are not exactly the same, even if both display some form of scepticism. The former is part of a heroic context and promotes Bacon’s advancement of learning. The latter is fraught with anxiety, irony and perplexity. Naudé aims at establishing an ideal library, or monument. Bayle is focused on collecting documents.
