“Il est Shakespeare !” : le génie shakespearien dans quelques Vies françaises

Abstract : This article deals with some French biographies of or biographical notes on Shakespeare that were published together with the editions and translations of the plays in France between the eighteenth and the twentieth centuries. Are biographies supposed to shed light on the works, as La Place thought, or are they, on the contrary, and as Pichot stated, in contradiction with the works ? Biographies differ according to the periods and the translators’ interests, but they clearly contributed to the making of the notion of what is “Shakespearean” and they help us understand what it might mean.
