Lire/voir 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' d’Oscar Wilde à la lumière de l’expressionnisme

A hybrid object, an illustrated book brings together two sets of distinct signs that complement, illuminate each other and weave dialectical relationships. This article aims at studying the edition of The Ballad of Reading Gaol illustrated by German expressionist artist Erich Heckel in 1907, in order to examine the effects produced by the encounter between text and image in this edition. After replacing The Ballad of Reading Gaol and the edition illustrated by Erich Heckel in the respective contexts in which they emerged, this article analyses some of the modalities of the transposition of Oscar Wilde’s poem in Erich Heckel’s woodcuts, a transposition which sheds light on the text. It eventually stresses that Heckel’s illustrations contain a hermeneutical potential and highlight the crisis of values and of meaning that affects the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Objet hybride, un livre illustré met en présence deux ensembles de signes distincts qui se complètent, s’éclairent et tissent des relations dialectiques. Cet article se propose d’étudier l’édition de The Ballad of Reading Gaol mise en image par l’artiste expressionniste allemand Erich Heckel en 1907, dans le but d’interroger les effets de lecture produits par la rencontre entre le texte et l’image dans cette édition. Après avoir replacé The Ballad of Reading Gaol et l’édition illustrée par Erich Heckel dans les contextes respectifs qui les ont vus naître, cet article analyse quelques-unes des opérations de transposition sur lesquelles se fonde la mise en images de l’œuvre d’Oscar Wilde par Erich Heckel, opérations qui éclairent le texte. Il souligne enfin que les illustrations d’Erich Heckel recèlent un potentiel herméneutique et mettent en lumière la crise des valeurs et du sens qui affecte la fin du XIXe et le début du XXe siècles.
