Ce que dit un frontispice sur la réception des contes de fées

Abstract : This article examines the frontispiece placed at the beginning of the first volume of the Cabinet des fees (1785) in the collection preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It is about Charles-Nicolas Cochin’s drawing engraved by Charles-Étienne Gaucher, used one year earlier as frontispiece of the Étrennes lyriques et anacréontiques and illustrating Sylvain Maréchal’s poem entitled “Love’s Grave”. The article suggests seeing in this re-use an allegorical representation of the fairy tale as a genre: Mayer hopes to resurrect it thanks to the collection he publishes.
