Bizarre et vie privée dans l'œuvre en prose de Nerval

Abstract : The term “bizarre” evokes heterogeneous mixtures, strangeness, and deviation, ideas that turn up in Nerval’s descriptions of rooms, mores, and the inner life. Furthermore, when “bizarre” means something which reason cannot explain, it can lead yet more towards the private, isolated, inner life. Thus Nerval would seem to exemplify Bakhtin’s observation that in the 19 th century the grotesque became a “chamber grotesque”, cut off from the public spheres — except that Nerval writes at times of collectively experienced bizarrerie, or tries to find its precedents and therefore take it out of the private sphere.
