Le commentaire comme exercice spirituel chez Galien

Abstract : Galen of Pergamum has commented numerous treatises of the Hippocratic Corpus. He pretends to have started his commentaries to train himself (ἐμαυτὸν γυμνάζων). This paper aims to question this assertion and to go beyond its evident meaning. Writing hypomnemata is firstly a memory exercise for Galen, but I propose here a new interpretation of the word hypomnema, which takes the material layout of ancient books into account. Through the study of three examples of exercises (metalepsis, paraphrase and melete), I would like to show that commentary was, for Galen, a kind of spiritual exercise.
