« Le corps en prière des fidèles catholiques, d’après les catéchismes imprimés en France à l’époque moderne »

Abstract : The catechisms printed in France from mid 16th century to early 18th century have a number of developments on corporal aspects of the prayer. These touch to the sign of the cross and the private prayer as well as the public prayer and its interactions with the private prayer. These texts explain the signification of gestures and postures as well as the nature of their efficiency. The virtue of modesty is often put forward as it allows to link individual devotion with public prayer and the social function of cult. These books show therefore a complete system of significations about which only the Port-Royalists seem somewhat doubtful.
