L’enseignement des langues étrangères sous la Troisième République : des disciplines en prise avec les relations internationales

Abstract : The history of modern language teaching in France highlights the ambiguous relationship between France and the rest of the world between the 1870s and 1940. The desire to boost and diversify the languages taught in France, especially around the years 1900-1902, was accompanied by significant efforts to exploit the teaching of foreign languages as a means of influencing international relations. Teachers of different languages, including English, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and Russian, played a complex role in the relationship between France and other countries.
