An Experiment in Ethics: Inventing a People in John Steinbeck’s 'The Grapes of Wrath'

Abstract

What is John Steinbeck's philosophy in the 'The Grapes of Wrath'? The meaning of the book is to be found in the minds of its readers who are invited to construct their own vision of their future, discover new possibilities of life, and imagine a new sort of "people".' Steinbeck's approach-what he calls non-teleological thinking-is resolutely immanent.
