A literary criticism exploring the differences between male desire and female desire in the novel "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" by Ernest J. Gaines is presented. The double consciousness, a concept outlined by sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois, present in the novel's African American female protagonist is explained in relation to such desire. The relationship between scapegoating and the deaths of the novel's male characters is also detailed.
