Qu’est-ce qu’une région modèle ? Le pays de Bade et le mythe du « Musterländle ». Potentialités et limites (XIXe-XXe siècles)

Abstract : Since the end of the 19th century, the land of Baden had the reputation of a model state in Southern Germany (Musterländle in Alemannic German), due to its excellent administration and the “liberal” constitution of 1818 granted by the Grand-Duke after the territorial readjustments of the Napoleonic era. After 1945, the “Old-Badeners” opposed to the idea of a combination with Württemberg used the myth as an argument in order to defend the status quo. Literary representations of Baden’s “liberality” often turned a blind eye to the reality of political strife and turmoil in the country. The myth did not integrate these problems of daily political life.
