Représentations du protestantisme dans la nouvelle historique des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles

Abstract : This article’s objective is to study the representation of Protestant, and other, characters who attack the Catholic Church in order to indirectly justify the Huguenots through the historical novellas of three different periods. The first of these mainly insisted on the drama of their plots and on moral reflections. But after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, attacks on Rome become virulent, which leads people to become interested in the origins of Reformation or to demand freedom of conscience. Such criticism finds an extension in the 18th century novellas, where the prince of Condé embodies the values of the Enlightenment. The character of the Huguenot thus contributed to the popularity, unabated until the French Revolution, of the genre.
