Techniques cycliques et enjeux compositionnels dans les quatuors de Debussy et de Ravel

Abstract : If the string quartets of Debussy and Ravel were often considered similar, they illustrate however two very different treatments of the "cyclic form". Based on the writings of the time, the study shows how Debussy explores thoroughly the possibilities of the "cyclic form" by involving, from a single thematic idea, composition settings even the most unexpected while Ravel, on the contrary, tries to hide its cyclical processes, particularly by drowning them among many themes. More generally, the study examines the problems of composition that result from the use of cyclic processes and the issues arising, and it highlights the diversity of solutions and choices, which can be regarded as a demonstrative act and a way for composers to position itself in the musical context of this time.
